Retaining and motivating the right people
Can you respond positively to these questions?
- Do your managers have a crystal clear view of where the company is going and what it needs to do to get there?
- Does each manager know what they personally need to deliver to underwrite the company's success?
- Do you have the required people capabilities to deliver on your short term, medium term and long term business plans, how are these expressed and do the individuals know they are crucial to these plans?
- If not, how do you propose to fill those people/skill gaps...? Hiring, developing, re-assigning roles or firing to make way for new skills
- Do you have an ongoing training plan for all your key people and a training budget which can be utilised as the business grows?
- Do you have regular team briefing sessions so that everyone knows the weekly and monthly targets and progress against these targets?
- Do you have systems and kep performance indicators that enable you and your managers to measure success?
- Are managers who can, or should, do better told about it - and do they get training, coaching and direction to improve?
- Do your staff ask you questions and show a genuine interest in working for you?
- Do you walk the talk & talk the walk with customers, senior colleagues and the rest of the team?
- What training and development needs do you have personally....what are you doing about them?
- Do you carry out 1-1's each month with your team.....if you do, how do you rate these 1-1's? ... do you find them a necessary evil or do you see them as a chance to recharge your batteries and get ideas for the business?
- Do your competitors keep trying to poach your staff?
- How do you think about pay? How effective are you in rewarding and motivating your team?
